Newborns only need 2–3 baths a week until the cord falls off, then you can move to daily or every-other-day. Here's how to bath baby without losing your mind.
What you'll need
- A baby tub or clean bucket lined with a soft towel
- Lukewarm water (37 °C — test with your elbow)
- A tear-free baby wash (Johnson's or Himalaya)
- Two soft hooded towels
- Fresh nappy + outfit ready to go
The 7-step routine
- Undress baby and wrap in one towel.
- Wet a clean cloth and wipe the face — eyes first, outer corner inward.
- Tip baby gently into the tub, supporting head with one hand at all times.
- Pour water on body with your free hand. Use a small amount of wash.
- Wash creases — neck, armpits, behind ears, between thighs.
- Rinse thoroughly. Soap residue irritates skin.
- Lift out, wrap in dry towel, pat (don't rub) dry, dress immediately.
The whole thing should take 5–8 minutes. Don't linger — newborns lose body heat fast. Sing while you bath. Eye contact + your voice + warm water = a baby who looks forward to bath time.
